Sweetening the deal, more than 85 percent of Canada’s refined sugar is sold to food manufacturers for use in value added products (2). These sugar using industries generated over $31.4 billion in sales in 2023 and support thousands of jobs across the country (2). From bakeries and beverage producers to confectionery and dairy manufacturers, a reliable supply of refined sugar is essential. Simply put, the sugar industry helps fuel Canada’s food processing sector, one of the country’s largest manufacturing industries.
A Competitive Advantage for Ontario
The opening of Sucro’s Hamilton refinery marks a major investment in Canada’s food manufacturing supply chain. The $135 million facility on Pier 15, completed in April 2026, is expected to process more than one million tonnes of sugar annually, dramatically increasing domestic refining capacity (3). For food manufacturers, that means improved access to a key ingredient, lower transportation costs, and a more resilient local supply chain. It also provides greater supply certainty at a time when businesses continue to navigate global market volatility.
